The Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People has an experience & committed well trained staff on disability and development field and has strong network with the National level organization, Government and agencies like National Institute for Mentally Handicapped (NIMH), National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (NIHH), National Institute for the Orthopedic Handicapped (NIOH), Indian Institute for the Cerebral Palsy (IICP) and National institute for Vocational Training etc. Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People (IFTHABP) since 2001 has started to implement both need and right based service for the persons with disabilities. IFTHABP is working on disability and development by the financial & Technical supports of West Bengal Sarva Shiksha Mission, West Bengal Madrasha Education, and ONGC also International Rotary clubs.

Already running ongoing Projects & Programs of disability & development are a) Advocacy and Awareness program on disability rights and millennium goal b) Assistive device support and door to door of disabilities rehabilitation and training program c) Recreation Centre for the Children with Disabilities and youth with disabilities d) Disabled self help group e) Educational supports f) Income generating Program g) Mainstreaming disability in development h) Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Home Based Training(HBT) . Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People complements its income through fund raising campaigns, donors and sponsors. Due to increasing cost and decreasing donations Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People now faces severe financial constraints and therefore new major schemes cannot be undertaken without generating sufficient funds.

Success indicators

We are very thankful to our community, volunteers and management who are always involved in the grassroots –level in the Rural and Urban areas of Kolkata city and surrounded district of West Bengal. Our organization is undertaking various development and special education for the disabilities, related with social welfare, Health, Aids awareness and others programmes in the Rural and urban Areas of Kolkata,South and North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. The volunteers of the organization visit the remote villages and exteriors to aware the people on their rights and duties and to engage the people in different training programmes. We work without any discrimination of caste, religion, creed, colour and gender.

We are always insisting in our programs operation that local participation of people must be assured and their willingness and option must be regarded and implemented on genuine ground. We think and hope that people should be empowered, so that they could chock out their plan, Organize plan and after implementation they could access and evaluate programme.
